NEMF 2011 NEMF Foray News Paul Smith's College is located on beautiful Lower Saint Regis Lake, situated within the St. Regis Canoe area and the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks. Paul Smith's College is located close to Lake Placid and Saranac Lake. It is easily accessible to I-87 and convenient to Albany, Burlington, and Montreal. Dr. Tim Baroni, from SUNY Cortland and recipient of the Distinguished Mycologist Award from the MSA, is our chief mycologist. Tim has taught a summer field mycology course for over 25 years in nearby Raquette Lake. Professional mycologists will include some newcomers to our faculty. Andy Methven from Eastern Illinois University, Alex Weir from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and Kathie Hodge from Cornell University have accepted our invite. Long time Fungi Perfecti staffer, Jim Goiun who is also an alumni of Paul Smith's College, will happily join us. In addition, Gary Lincoff (Audubon Society Guide to Mushrooms author), Roy Halling, Roz Lowen, Rod Tuloss, Walt Sturgeon, Noah Siegel, and Bill Yule will round out our faculty. John Plishke III will be our sorting chair. Programs will include a mix of ID workshops along with papermaking, cultivation, medicinals, and dyeing. Stacey Kalechitz, Walks Chair has
assembled a variety of foray locations close to the College to allow maximum
gathering time in the forests. Site selections have been chosen from over
six million acres in the Adirondack Park. Committee members traveled to Paul
Smith's to explore sites. Information was gathered on fungi, tree type,
trails, and forest undergrowth. Detailed descriptions of the site, along
with degree of difficulty will be available with the foray sign up sheets at
the college during the foray. We will have one field trip to the Wild
Center, the new Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks. Expect good
collecting with a wide variety of mushrooms. At the last NEMF at Paul
Smith's College, 384 species of mushrooms were collected and identified. A
complete listing can be found on the NEMF website. Pat Reehil and Jean Fahey are our lead mycophagists. Lodging will consist of a variety of college dormitory offerings. Lower and
Upper St. Regis provides suites with individual rooms and kitchens. Essex
and Franklin Halls have doubles with individual bathrooms. Lydia Martin Smith Hall
provides doubles and triples in a traditional dorm style with a shared
bathroom on each floor. Room assignments are on a first-come first served
basis. There are nearby private motels and campgrounds if the college
experience is not for you. Meals will be served cafeteria style. Commuters
are invited. Information for all the housing/food options can be found on the
